Obituary

Barbara Field Hinkle was received into Jesus's arms on June 27, 2024 at Autumn Oaks Assisted Living in Manchester, TN where she had resided for the past year. She was born March 21, 1924 in White Plains, NY to Wm. Clifford & Mildred Field. She grew up in Mahopac Falls, NY, graduated from Mahopac Central School on January 28, 1938 & then enrolled into Chrysler Commercial College for a 2 year secretarial program. She worked for a few years until called into the WAVES to serve her country in the secretarial pool. She completed her basic training in Oklahoma City, OK & finished her service at the Navy shipyard in Jersey by December 17, 1945. She was a long-time resident of Black Mountain, NC where she retired from the Historical Foundation in Montreat, NC after 25 years. She was active her entire life in the Presbyterian Church holding various roles in the choir & office. She was an avid gardener & hiker which aided in her great mobility well into her 96th year of life.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clifford & Mildred Field; her spouse, William H. Hinkle; & all her siblings (George Field, Sande Powell & Sally Horstman). She is survived by her 4 daughters & sons-in-law; Beverly & Bob Skelley of Cleveland, OH, Katharyn & Vincent Greene of Cameron, NC, Lynne & Donnie Gann of Rockvale, TN & Chloe & David Duncan of Swannanoa, NC; 9 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; & many loving nieces & nephews.

Barbara will be interred with her husband, William H. Hinkle, in Swannanoa, NC. An intimate graveside service will be held at Black Mtn., NC on August 28th.

In lieu of flowers; please make any donations to Samaritans Purse or send a plant or bush in her memory to Autumn Oaks, 1621 McMinnville Hwy, Manchester, TN 37355. They will be planted outside her window where she lived.
