Herbert
Jenkins
September 3, 1936 – January 13, 2024
Herbert Jenkins, known as just "Herb" to his family and friends, passed away to eternal rest on Saturday, January 13, 2024. He was born in Evanston, IL to Ethel Lollis Jenkins and Rev. William Montgomery Jenkins on September 3, 1936. He was 87 years old.
Herb worked at Nortel Networks for several years. Working at Nortel brought him to Nashville from Chicago. Herb served and was discharged honorably from the United States Marine Corps, where he received the rank of Corporal. He was an avid, skilled, and much honored bowler and golfer; and he could play several musical instruments. His love of jazz was well known among his family and friends. Herb took great pride in making others laugh. He often referred to himself as "BILL – Boy, I Love to Lie" because laughing-and-lying was another favorite pastime that he took pleasure in sharing with others.
Herb attended several churches while in Nashville, with his last association being with Greater Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church. He served in several leadership capacities and was a member of the church choir where he sang bass/baritone. He was also a member of two other singing groups: New Spirit! & Friends, and the former Pearl/Cameron Community Choir.
Herb leaves to reminisce on his life and times, his children: Brian Jenkins, Karen Jenkins Piercey, Dann Jenkins, Joshua Jenkins, Candace Allen, Lakesia Allen, LaQuantta Ayewa, and Laquentta Ayewa Adelanke; grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews; longtime friend and 22-year partner Sharon Dean; devoted long term personal caregiver Gayle Fitzgerald; many friends in the bowling community of Nashville; and other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 27, 12:00pm, at Greater Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, 1300 South Street, Nashville. He will be interred at the Pegram Veterans Cemetery at a later date.
