Paul Herbert
Moore
August 23, 1941 – October 5, 2024
It is with a mixture of joy and sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Paul H. Moore. Our joy comes from knowing he is with his Lord and knowing he was ready to let go of his worn-out body. Our sadness comes from knowing we must go on without him.
Paul was born in 1941 in East Cleveland, Ohio. In the early 1950s, his family moved from the city to the country of Willoughby Hills, Ohio. Paul had jobs working with rural horses and driving the YMCA bus. Unbeknownst to him, he was living just a few houses down the road from his future wife, the farmer's daughter. They both graduated from Willoughby Eastlake North in 1959.
While she went off to school at The Ohio State University, he went off to the United States Merchant Marine Academy. From 1959 to 1961, he traveled to Africa and South America, making several passes through the Panama Canal.
With encouragement from his dad, he went down the street to check in on Judy Nash who was home for the summer. In 1962 he worked closer to home with a job on an ore boat, on Lake Erie.
In September 1962, Paul married Judy, and they began creating a family together. Paul shifted to jobs on land as a salesman, working for Firestone and Dayglo paint, eventually going on to make a career selling dyes and pigments primarily with Hoechst. His outgoing personality and relationship skills made him a natural and he had 40 years of success.
In the fall of 1972, the family, now totaling six, moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. They found a church home at St. Timothy's in Anderson Township and stayed for many years. Paul was active in the church, serving on the Vestry as both Junior and Senior Warden, helping with the lobster sales, and traveling on a mission trip to Honduras. He was also involved in the Faith Alive renewal movement and Cursillo. With the help of Bishop Herb Thompson, he rededicated his life to God.
Retirement found him playing golf and volunteering at the Shriner's Hospital in Cincinnati. In 2004 they moved to Silver Spring, MD to help with grandkids, where he continued to volunteer, this time at a thrift store known as Pennyworth, sing in the choir at Grace Episcopal Church, and work on his golf game. Paul still liked to travel and did so now with his wife. Trips to Barbados, San Diego, CA, St. John's, VI, New England, Atlanta for the Olympics, and Great Britain were among the highlights.
Ten years later, in 2014, they moved to a small town in South Carolina and a church home at Holy Cross in Simpsonville. Paul continued to stay involved, working the annual Pumpkin Patch fundraiser and participating in a weekly men's bible study. After beating small cell lung cancer, but not the progression of time, Paul and Judy sold their home and moved into an independent senior community.
In early 2024, after a second child moved to Nashville, TN, they decided to move to a nearby community to be closer to all their children and grandchildren and a special addition who Paul finally got to meet in person, a great-grandson, Henry.
He will be fondly remembered for treating every new person he met as a friend. He loved being connected to family, golf buddies, church colleagues, and the everyday service workers he met along the way.
Paul is survived by his wife, Judith (Nash); his four children, Elizabeth Brinkley (Charles), Cynthia Davidson (James), David Moore (Samantha Wigand), and Scott Moore (Jen Fink); and a beloved former daughter-in-law, Christine (Bishop) Moore. Seven grandchildren; Abigail Tomlinson (William), Mikaela, Luke, Zachary, Will, Nathan, and Katie. One great-grandson; Henry Tomlinson. Two siblings; sister Nancy Baxter (Bruce), brother John Moore (Susan).
He is predeceased by his parents, Herb (1973) and Peg (1999), and his sister Judy (2023).
A memorial service is planned for 11:00 a.m. on Saturday November 2, 2024, at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church. 8101 Beechmont Ave, Cincinnati, OH 45255. A reception will be hosted by the family at the church after the service.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Shriners Children's Hospital.
